On 11 May, nail professionals from across the UK and Ireland converged at Stockport College for the practical judging phase of the Scratch Stars Awards. Finalists across nine technical and artistic categories demonstrated their skills under the scrutiny of expert judges. The event provided a platform for these artists to showcase their talent and technical precision in a live competition setting.
The competition required finalists to create masterpieces on blank tips or models' nails within strict time limits. Judges assessed intricate details such as smile lines, apex placement, colour blending, and symmetry. Beyond the practical tasks, each finalist also participated in a five-minute interview with four judges, answering three pre-determined questions that contributed to their overall score. This dual assessment format highlighted both creative flair and professional communication abilities.
The event at Stockport College featured spacious facilities, facilitating a smooth operation for competitors, judges, and the Scratch team. The atmosphere was a blend of intense focus and nervous energy, yet a strong sense of community prevailed. Competitors offered mutual encouragement, underscoring a supportive industry spirit despite the competitive stakes. Reaching this live judging stage represented a significant accomplishment, reflecting months of dedicated preparation and practice.
The high standards displayed by the finalists illustrate the ongoing evolution and innovation within the nail industry. The judges observed a clear passion and dedication, evident in the advanced techniques and artistic interpretations presented. This practical judging day, culminating in a five-minute interview for each finalist, served as a valuable career milestone, offering recognition and a significant platform to showcase expertise. Winners will be announced at The Scratch Stars Party on 5 July in London.
