Akin Konizi, a four-time recipient of British Hairdresser of the Year, explains how winning the HJ's British Hairdressing Awards has profoundly shaped his career and that of his team at HOB Salons.
Konizi's journey began in 2001 with the Eastern Hairdresser of the Year award, a win that took three attempts. He notes that persistence is crucial, as initial losses often precede eventual success. After winning London Hairdresser of the Year in 2005, his ambition focused on the national British Hairdresser of the Year title, which he achieved four times consecutively from 2009.
The recognition amplified both personal career expectations and business visibility, transforming Konizi from a stylist into an industry inspiration. This newfound confidence facilitated strategic decisions regarding recruitment, advertising, and collaborations. He likens the award's prestige to winning an Oscar, highlighting its growing industry and public recognition over the past 24 years.
Beyond individual achievement, Konizi stresses the importance of embedding this winning culture within a salon for sustained success. He views passing down opportunities to the next generation as vital for longevity and actively cultivates ambitious young talent at HOB, which aims to be the UK's largest apprentice training company. He suggests widespread participation in the awards could elevate industry-wide standards by teaching essential skills from research to execution.
Konizi also links award participation directly to client retention, asserting that visible engagement with the awards boosts a hairdresser's confidence and professional standing. The deadline for the 2026 awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, is 26 June at 5pm.
