Katy Grimshaw, founder of Spectrum One Hair Extensions, has introduced 'Beyond The Blend', a new educational library focused on extension cutting techniques. The course aims to elevate stylists' skills beyond basic blending.
The Butterfly Cut, detailed within the course, is designed for clients with multiple extension packs. It maintains a thick, heavy base while incorporating choppy layers for movement and texture.
The method involves establishing a solid perimeter, aligning with the shortest extension. Sides are then blended forward, creating continuity from back to front.
Graduation is achieved by positioning the client's chin upwards when working on front sections. Grimshaw emphasises the ability to cut deeply into layers due to the volume from multiple extension packs.
Heavy corners are shattered using the inner blade, creating textured layers. Freehand layering further enhances this texture. The process includes blending natural hair by point cutting over-directed sections.
A key step involves layering the top section of extensions with the natural hair. Scooping motions are used to layer between the natural base and the new extension baseline, ensuring continued volume.
Final softening of corners is achieved by directing hair outwards and upwards. This technique ensures soft transitions without harsh lines, preserving the desired layered effect with a solid base.
