The National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF) has launched the 'State of the Sector: An Employer Survey'. This initiative aims to collect crucial data from UK salons, barbershops, beauty businesses, and aesthetics clinics that employ staff. The findings will directly inform discussions with HM Treasury and the Low Pay Commission ahead of the Autumn 2026 Budget.
This survey arrives as the sector grapples with significant financial strain. The NHBF notes that over 50,000 businesses, supporting more than 178,000 jobs and generating £6.1 billion annually, are facing rising costs. These pressures impact recruitment, pricing strategies, and the ability to plan for future investment.
The government's recent temporary VAT cut for summer activities highlights a recognition of tax policy's role in supporting consumer-facing industries. However, the NHBF argues the hair and beauty sector has not received similar targeted support, despite clear evidence of growth restrictions.
The survey probes critical areas including trading conditions, staffing challenges, wage and National Insurance costs, VAT, business rates, rent, and general expenses. The NHBF stresses that employer input is vital for its 'Respect Our Sector' campaign and future policy advocacy. These discussions will focus on taxation, employment costs, apprenticeships, and overall business sustainability.
Sam Silver, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at the NHBF, emphasises the need for employers to speak out. He states that businesses seek a fair operating environment that enables employment, training, and future investment, not special treatment.
