Chris May, formerly of London's HOB Academy and Wella World Studio, relocated to Margate and opened a five-chair salon, Marcella, in November 2023. The business expanded rapidly, necessitating a move to a new space within six months.
May acquired the lease for the upper ground floor of Waverley House, a historic building with sea views and street access. This move, prompted by the prior venue's closure, transformed a setback into an opportunity for growth.
The salon's interior, designed by May and long-time stylist Sophia Gabriella, blends New York loft elements with a coastal retreat feel. Key features include a warm colour palette, abundant natural light, and original wooden flooring. A notable addition is a stainless steel bar, intended to foster a social atmosphere for clients.
The balcony overlooking Margate Main Sands serves as a significant design feature, providing light, sea views, and a relaxation space for clients. The salon retained 10 team members and operated on a £60,000 budget.
May's advice for salon owners undertaking similar projects centres on budget adherence, phased implementation of design elements, and embracing the process. This salon's success highlights how unique location and thoughtful design can create a distinct client experience, moving beyond functional space to a branded destination.
