The Secret Garden Salon in Leicester has experienced its sixth Pride flag theft, a recurring event the owners label as targeted vandalism. This latest incident, occurring just five months after the previous one in September 2025, highlights the persistent harassment faced by the business, which is recognised as an inclusive and gender-neutral space. The flag was stolen again despite being moved higher on the building following earlier attacks.
Owners George Waterfield and Darren Cunningham express distress over the repeated attacks, noting the impact on staff and clients. The September 2025 incident involved a person in a balaclava tearing down the flag in broad daylight. The salon shared CCTV footage, drawing significant public attention and support. Community members responded with messages of solidarity and a community gathering, including drag queens and approximately 140 local people, was held to relaunch the flag.
Despite the ongoing harassment, the salon owners state they will not be intimidated. They are committed to displaying the flag and maintaining their salon as a safe haven. The repeated incidents and the community's strong positive response suggest a broader conflict between acts of intolerance and a community's commitment to inclusion. The salon owners aim to use these events to foster conversations about respect and the significance of community support.
