Natalie Kirk transitioned from a disillusioned retail role in 2004 to establishing Nail Perfection by Natalie in Derbyshire. After a suggestion to try a nail course, what began as a sideline developed into a full career. She trained in various techniques, including gel manicures and extensions, eventually becoming self-employed as demand for her mobile services grew.
Kirk's first salon opened in Breaston, Derbyshire, the village's initial nail space. Initially operating alongside her mother, the business later benefited from renting out nail desks to three other technicians. Over 11 years, Kirk honed her skills through courses with brands like Jessica Cosmetics, NSI, Gelish, and The GelBottle Inc.
A relocation to a larger premises, formerly an estate agents, required extensive renovations, including rewiring and re-plastering, with her husband providing crucial support. The current Nail Perfection by Natalie salon features a bright, practical design with personal touches like seasonal florals and a custom-designed nail desk built for her height.
The salon accommodates five self-employed nail technicians on the ground floor. Three upstairs rooms are rented by other beauty professionals offering massage, facials, and lash services. Kirk's own services include gel and builder gel manicures, extensions, and pedicures, with builder gel being the most popular. She utilises brands such as Personaility, Lecenté, and The GelBottle Inc for longevity and LCN UK for toenail reconstruction.
Her clientele ranges from 18 to 80 years old, with some clients having supported her for two decades. Inspired by celebrity manicurist Jenni Coles of Personaility, Kirk has now moved into education, working as an educator for the brand. She aims to support emerging nail technicians and eventually pass on her salon.
