Clarins has rolled out an AI Shade Finder, claiming a 96% foundation match accuracy. The tool uses smartphone-based spectroscopy and a rapid sequence of images under varying light conditions to analyse skin tone and undertone within 60 seconds. Developed with Silicon Valley firm IlluminateAI, it aims to offer more precise recommendations than previously possible.
This technology moves beyond simple colourimetry to capture a skin's unique colour signature. The service is now available in over 100 Clarins boutiques and counters across seven countries, including the UK. Early in-store tests reported increased conversion rates and larger average basket sizes, particularly supporting sales of their Double Serum Foundation.
For salon and beauty business owners, this highlights the increasing integration of advanced technology into customer experience. While Clarins limits this to its own retail spaces, the underlying principle of personalised, data-driven recommendations is adaptable. The key question remains whether smaller businesses can leverage similar accessible technology to enhance their own services.
