Award-winning nail artist Zrinka Vuksan Bolancha, founder of Zrinka B Nail Academia and Zer.0 by Zrinka, recently collaborated on a fashion editorial project titled 'Swallow the Key'. This project, conceptualised by stylist Layla Desjardins, explored themes of curated isolation and the theatre of solitude. Bolancha's involvement aimed to enhance the photoshoot's atmosphere using nail design alone. Her 13 years of industry experience, including judging 13 Nailympia events, informed her creative direction.
Bolancha developed three distinct nail looks inspired by garment structures and dress patterns from the editorial's mood board. The first look featured stark, hand-sculpted black claw-like nails, relying solely on solid colour for impact. This was later adapted for another outfit by incorporating silver piercing jewellery, creating a 'pure grunge' aesthetic intended to complement a key belt accessory.
Her personal favourite design, the second look, utilized a silver palette. These curved and cut nails, resembling press-ons and coated in silver chrome gel, were further enhanced on six of them. A hand-painted pattern and texture were added, creating an intricate style that paired with elaborate clothing.
The final nail design adopted a simple nude shade, selected to match the model's complexion. This look was clean and glossy, complementing the dewy skin makeup. The collection demonstrated a progression from intense, solid colour to metallic finishes and finally to a natural nude, effectively complementing both the fashion and each other.
